The Modern dark red brick facility was erected in 2004 to replace a 1926 facility. The courthouse is at Anderson and 5th streets. Nebraska State Highway 92 is three blocks to the north of the site. KP Construction provided the building designs. The county was established on January 1, 1890 from Native American Territory as the 89th county with Tryon as the only county seat. McPherson County is named for Civil War General James B. McPherson. The county seat source name is disputed.

The county is surrounded clockwise by Hooker, Thomas, Logan, Lincoln, Keith, and Arthur counties.
