The Romanesque Revival stone courthouse was built in 1900 and sits on a square at 18th, N, 19th, and O streets.  United States Highway 75 is four blocks to the east of the site.  A park environment surrounds the courthouse.  The county was founded on January 1, 1855 as the 14th county.  Brownville and Auburn have served as the county seat.  The architect was George A. Berlinghof.  The county is named for the Nemaha River with is Native American for “muddy water.”  Auburn is named for Auburn, New York. 

Nemaha County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Three District Court Judges serve Nemaha, Clay, Fillmore, Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Nuckolls, Pawnee, Richardson, Saline and Thayer counties and Three County Court Judges serve Nemaha, Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Pawnee, Richardson, Saline, and Thayer counties.  Nemaha County is on the southeast border with Missouri.  Omaha, Nebraska is north and Lincoln, Nebraska is northwest of the county.  The Missouri River forms its eastern border.  The county center is 2.4 miles Northeast of Auburn.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Otoe County and Missouri and Richardson, Pawnee, and Johnson counties. 

The area of the county is 409 square miles.  It is 87 out of 93 in the state.  It ranks 41 out of 93 in population in the state.  It has a density of 17.3 persons per square mile making it 24 out of 93 in the state.  Nemaha County has 68.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 75 travels north to south through the county from Otoe County to Richardson County.  United States Highway 136 goes east to west from Missouri to Johnson County.  The county looks like a hand with its thumb and little finger sticky out and all facing east.  Auburn is located near the center of the county.  Auburn is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 49.0% of the county population.  The county is pronounced NEE-MA-HA.
