Another Art Deco masonry building for Rock County was built in 1940.  It is sited on State, Bertha, Park, and Caroline streets.  Nebraska State Highway 7 is one block west of the location.  The architect was E. B. Watson.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  There were also 1890 and 1897 courthouses in Bassett, the only county seat.  Rock County was formed on January 1, 1888 from Brown County as the 84th county.  The county is named for Rock Creek.  The county seat is named for settler J. W. Bassett. 

Rock County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two District Court Judges and Three County Court Judges serve Rock, Blaine, Boyd, Brown, Cherry, Custer, Garfield, Greeley, Holt, Howard, Keya Paha, Loup, Sherman, Valley and Wheeler counties.  Rock County is in northern Nebraska.  Grand Island, Nebraska is south and Omaha, Nebraska is southeast of the county.  The county is 20.3 miles South-Southeast of Bassett.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Keya Paha, Boyd, Holt, Loup, and Brown counties. 

The area of the county is 1008 square miles.  It is 16 out of 93 in the state.  It ranks 80 out of 93 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1.3 persons per square mile making it 80 out of 93 in the state.  Rock County has 48.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 20 crosses the county from east to west from Holt County to Brown County.  United States Highway 183 enters joined with United States Highway 20 from Brown County, splits and exits south into Loup County.  The county is shaped like a stick of gum with a bite taken out.  Bassett is in the northwest corner of the county.  Bassett is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 42.9% of the county population.
