The stately Beaux Arts courthouse was constructed in 1905 on a square at Seward, 5th, Main, and 6th streets.  United States Highway 34 is Main Street in the town.  A Justice Center was added in 2017.  The county was organized on January 1, 1855 from parts of Cass and Pierce counties as the 18th county with Seward as the only county seat.  George C. Berlinghof is the building designer.  The facility features a tower and veteran memorials are on the grounds.  The county and county seat are named for United States Secretary of State William H. Seward. 

Seward County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Commissioners.  Four District Court Judges and Four County Court Judges serve Seward, Boone, Butler, Colfax, Hamilton, Merrick, Nance, Platte, Polk, Saunders, and York counties.  The county is in eastern Nebraska.  Lincoln, Nebraska is directly east and Grand Island, Nebraska is west of the county.  The county is 2 miles Southwest of Seward.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Butler, Saunders, Lancaster, Saline, Fillmore, York, and Polk counties. 

The area of the county is 575 square miles.  It is 50 out of 93 in the state.  It ranks 18 out of 93 in population in the state.  It has a density of 30.6 persons per square mile making it 14 out of 93 in the state.  Seward County has 68.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 80 goes east to west in the county from Lancaster County to York County.  United States Highway 6 enters from the east, Lancaster County, and exits south, Saline County.  United States Highway 34 parallels Interstate Highway 80 from Lancaster to York counties.  Seward County is a rectangle.  The City of Seward is located in the northeast quarter of the county.  Seward is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 43.4% of the county population.  This county is in the Lincoln Metropolitan Statistical Area.
