A 1904 red brick Romanesque Revival courthouse serves Sheridan County. It is on 2nd Street at Sprague Street. Second Street is United States Highway 20 in the town. W. T. Misner provided the building designs. Veteran memorials are on the grounds. The county was established on February 19, 1885 from Sioux County as the 77th county with Rushville as the only county seat. It is named for Civil War General Phillip H. Sheridan. Rushville is named for Rush Creek.
Sheridan County government consists of a sheriff, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Four District Court Judges and Five County Court Judges serve Sheridan, Banner, Box Butte, Cheyenne, Dawes, Deuel, Garden, Grant, Kimball, Morrill, Scotts Bluff, and Sioux counties (judicial.) The county is in the northwest part of the state on the border with South Dakota. Scottsbluff, Nebraska is southwest and Rapid City, South Dakota is northwest of the county. The county is 12.1 miles South of Rushville. The county is surrounded clockwise by South Dakota and Cherry, Grant, Garden, Morrill, Box Butte, and Dawes counties.

It has a density of 2.1 persons per square mile making it 76 out of 93 in the state. Sheridan County has 57.9% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 20 crosses through the county east to west from Cherry County to Dawes County. The county is an overall tall rectangle. Rushville is in the northwest quarter of the county. Gordon is in the northeast quarter of the county. Rushville is the county seat and Gordon is the largest city. Rushville is 16.0% of the county population while Gordon is 29.4% of the county population.
