The tan brick Beaux Arts facility in Loup City was erected in 1920.  It is sited on O Street between 6th and 7th streets.  Nebraska State Highway 92 is five blocks west of the site.  A basic wood building was the 1878 version.   Henningson Engineering Company provided the courthouse designs.  The structure features faux columns and veteran memorials are on the grounds.  Sherman County was formed on January 1, 1871 from parts of Buffalo County and Native American Territory as the 52nd county with Loup City as the only county seat.  The county is named for Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman.  The county seat is named for the Loup River.  It is also the source name for Loup County. 

Sherman County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two District Court Judges and Three County Court Judges serve Sherman, Blaine, Boyd, Brown, Cherry, Custer, Garfield, Greeley, Holt, Howard, Keya Paha, Loup, Rock, Valley and Wheeler counties.  Sherman County is in central Nebraska.  Grand Island, Nebraska is directly southeast of the county.  The county is 9.1 miles South-Southeast of Loup City.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Valley, Greeley, Howard, Buffalo, and Custer counties. 

The area of the county is 566 square miles.  It is 65 out of 93 in the state.  It ranks 66 out of 93 in population in the state.  It has a density of 5.2 persons per square mile making it 60 out of 93 in the state.  Sherman County has 54.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county is a rectangle.  Loup City is in the northern quarter of the county.  Loup City is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 35.6% of the county population.
