The masonry Classical Revival courthouse in Harrison was the 1930 version for the county.  The courthouse is on Main Street at 3rd Street.  Nebraska State Highway 29 is two blocks north of the site.  E. L. Goldsmith provided the building designs.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  An 1889 courthouse preceded the current one also in Harrison, the only county seat.  The county was established on February 17, 1877 from Native American Territory as the 66th county. Sioux County is named for the Native American tribe.  The county seat is named for United States President Benjamin Harrison.  Sioux County was the birthplace for 1 Nebraska Governor, Dwight P. Griswold. 

Sioux County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Four District Court Judges and Five County Court Judges serve Sioux, Banner, Box Butte, Cheyenne, Dawes, Deuel, Garden, Grant, Kimball, Morrill, Scotts Bluff, and Sheridan counties.  The county is in the northwest corner of the panhandle.  Wyoming is west and South Dakota is north of the county.  Scottsbluff, Nebraska is directly south of the county.  The county is 21.2 miles Southeast of Harrison.  The county is surrounded clockwise by South Dakota and Dawes, Box Butte, and Scotts Bluff counties and Wyoming. 

The area of the county is 1313 square miles.  It is 9 out of 93 in the state.  It ranks 81 out of 93 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.9 persons per square mile making it 89 out of 93 in the state.  Sioux County has 20.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 20 crosses the county east to west from Dawes County to Wyoming.  The county resembles a fat capital letter L.  Harrison is in the northwest quarter of the county.  Harrison is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city.  It is 20.7% of the county population.  The county is pronounced SOO.
