The red brick Modern facility was built in 1978.  The courthouse is on Lincoln, 5th, Grant, and 6th streets.  Lincoln Street is United States Highway 81 Business in the town.  Wilson and Company were the architects.  There are veteran memorials on the grounds.  An 1876 and a classic 1888 version preceded this current one, all in York, the only county seat.  The county was created on January 1, 1870 from parts of Cass and Pierce counties and Native American Territory as the 45th county.  The county and county seat are named for York, Pennsylvania. 

York County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Commissioners.  Four District Court Judges and Four County Court Judges serve York, Boone, Butler, Colfax, Hamilton, Merrick, Nance, Platte, Polk, Saunders, and Seward counties.  York County is in southeastern Nebraska.  Grand Island, Nebraska is west and Lincoln, Nebraska is east of the county.  The county is in York .5 miles West-Northwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Polk, Butler, Seward, Saline, Fillmore, Clay, and Hamilton counties. 

The area of the county is 576 square miles.  It is 47 out of 93 in the state.  It ranks 21 out of 93 in population in the state.  It has a density of 24.5 persons per square mile making it 20 out of 93 in the state.  York County has 75.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 80 crosses the county east to west from Seward County to Hamilton County.  United States Highway 34 parallels Interstate Highway 80 from Seward to Hamilton counties.  United States Highway 81 goes north to south from Polk County to Fillmore County.  York County is a rectangle.  The City of York is located near the center of the county.  York is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 57.1% of the county population.
