A Modern red brick and concrete building is the 2004 Atlantic County courthouse in Mays Landing.  It is located on Unami Boulevard at Atlantic Avenue.  United States Highway 40 is one block north of the site.  The architect is Hillier Group.  There was also an 1838 courthouse that preceded this one in Mays Landing, the only county seat.  Atlantic City also has an augmenting 1975 courthouse and a 1985 County Administration building.  Atlantic County was created on February 7, 1837 from Gloucester County as the 15th county.  It is named for the Atlantic Ocean.  Ocean County has the same source for its name.  Mays Landing is named for explorer Captain George May. 

Atlantic County government consists of a sheriff, a County Executive, and 9 Freeholders.  Nineteen Superior Court Judges serve Atlantic and Cape May counties.  Atlantic County is in southeast New Jersey on the Atlantic Ocean.  Newark, New Jersey is north and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is northwest of the county.  The county center is 6.8 miles North-Northeast of Mays Landing nearer Laureldale.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Burlington and Ocean counties and the Atlantic Ocean and Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Camden counties.  

The area of the county is 561 square miles.  It is 3 out of 21 in the state.  It ranks 15 out of 21 in population in the state.  It has a density of 489.4 persons per square mile making it 15 out of 21 in the state.  Atlantic County has 53.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 9 crosses north to south in the county from Burlington County to Cape May County.  United States Highway 30 originates and heads into Camden County, north.  United States Highway 40 originates and goes west into Gloucester County.  United States Highway 206 comes from the north, Burlington County, and terminates.  United States Highway 322 originates and travels northwest to Gloucester County.  The county resembles the State of Ohio tilted 45 degrees.  Mays Landing is in the southwest quarter of the county.  Atlantic City is on the southeast coast of the county.  Mays Landing is the county seat and Atlantic City is the largest city.  Mays Landing is unincorporated and is 0.02% of the county population.  Atlantic City is 14.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Atlantic City-Hammonton Metropolitan Statistical Area.
