The Modern brick courthouse was constructed in 1959.  The building is on Rancocas Road between Royal and Park streets.  New Jersey State Highway 38 is six blocks southwest of the courthouse.  Petty & Croft and Micklewright & Mountford are the designers.  There was a 1796 version earlier.  The county was founded on March 7, 1694 as an original county (2nd county.)  Burlington was the first county seat until 1696 when Mount Holly assumed the position.  The county is named for the town of Burlington, New Jersey.  Mount Holly is named for local hills covered with holly trees.  Burlington County was the birthplace for 4 New Jersey Governors, George F. Fort, John F. Fort, Clifford R. Powell, and Richard J. Hughes. 

Burlington County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Freeholders.  Thirteen Superior Court Judges serve Burlington County.  Burlington County is in south central New Jersey.  Newark, New Jersey is northeast and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is southwest of the county.  The county center is 10.4 miles Southeast of Mount Holly nearer Leisuretowne.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Mercer, Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic, and Camden counties and Pennsylvania. 

The area of the county is 805 square miles.  It is 1 out of 21 in the state.  It ranks 11 out of 21 in population in the state.  It has a density of 573.7 persons per square mile making it 14 out of 21 in the state.  Burlington County has 7.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 95 comes from Mercer County, north, and reenters Mercer County.  Interstate Highway 295 enters the county from Mercer County and exits south into Camden County.  United States Highway 9 cuts the southeast tip from Ocean County, northeast, to Atlantic County, southeast.  United States Highway 130 parallels Interstate Highway 295 from Mercer to Camden counties.  The county is a funnel pointing southeast.  Mount Holly is in the northwest quarter of the county.  The City of Burlington is located on the northwest border with Pennsylvania.  Mount Holly is the county seat and Burlington is the largest city.  Mount Holly is 2.2% of the county population although it is unincorporated.  Burlington is 2.1% of the county population.  This county is in the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area.
