The 1909 masonry Beaux Arts and American Renaissance structure replaced an 1844 courthouse.  The courthouse is on Broad Street at Fayette Street.  Broad Street is New Jersey State Highway 49 in the town.  Watson & Huckel provided the designs.  The building was enlarged in 1995.  Cumberland County was established on January 17, 1748 from Salem County as the 12th county with Bridgeton as the only county seat.  The county is named for the Duke of Cumberland.  The county seat name derives from bridging the Cohansey River.  Cumberland County was the birthplace for 1 New Jersey Governor, Elias P. Seeley. 

Cumberland County government consists of a sheriff and 7 Freeholders.  Twenty-two Superior Court Judges serve Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem counties.  Cumberland County is on the southern border of the county.  Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is north and Newark, New Jersey is northeast of the county.  The county center is 9.1 miles East-Southeast of Bridgeton in Millville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Gloucester, Atlantic, and Cape May counties and Delaware and Salem County. 

The area of the county is 489 square miles.  It is 5 out of 21 in the state.  It ranks 16 out of 21 in population in the state.  It has a density of 315.2 persons per square mile making it 17 out of 21 in the state.  Cumberland County has 75.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Cumberland County is shaped like a reverse check mark.  Bridgeton is in the northwest quarter of the county.  Vineland is in the northeast corner of the county.  Bridgeton is the county seat and Vineland is the largest city.  Bridgeton is 17.7% of the county population while Vineland is 39.4% of the county population.  This county is in the Vineland-Millville-Bridgeton Metropolitan Statistical Area.
