The 1910 masonry building replaced an 1845 version. The courthouse is on Newark Avenue at Baldwin Avenue. New Jersey State Highway 139 is two blocks northeast. Hugh Roberts is the designer of the Beaux Arts and Classical Revival courthouse. The building was restored in 1985. An Administration 1957 building augments the courthouse. The county was created on January 1, 1840 from Bergen and Essex counties as the 18th county. The county is named for the Hudson River. Jersey City, the only county seat, is named for the state. Hudson County was the birthplace for 7 New Jersey Governors, Franklin Murphy, James F. Fielder, Clarence E. Case, Edward I. Edwards, A. Harry Moore, John J. Farmer, Jr., and James E. McGreevey.
