A Modern red brick 1996 Justice Center augments the 1828 classier white stone courthouse.  The courthouse building is on Main Street at Court.  The site is four blocks west of New Jersey State Highway 31.  The Greek Revival courthouse architect’s last name is Springer.  Hunterdon County was founded on March 11, 1714 from Burlington County as the 10th county.  Trenton (1714), Amwell (1780), and Flemington (1790) have all served as the only county seat.  The county is named for Colonial Governor Robert Hunter.  The county seat is named for settler Samuel Fleming.  Hunterdon County was the birthplace for 4 New Jersey Governors, John Lambert, George C. Ludlow, Foster M. Voorhees, and Horace G. Prall. 

Hunterdon County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Freeholders.  Seventeen Superior Court Judges serve Hunterdon, Somerset, and Warren counties.  The county is on the northwest border with Pennsylvania.  Newark, New Jersey is east and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is south of the county.  The county center is 6 miles Northwest of Flemington nearer Franklin.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Morris, Somerset, and Mercer counties and Pennsylvania and Warren County. 

The area of the county is 430 square miles.  It is 8 out of 21 in the state.  It ranks 18 out of 21 in population in the state.  It has a density of 299.9 persons per square mile making it 19 out of 21 in the state.  Hunterdon County has 19.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 78 crosses the county from east to west from Somerset County to Warren County.  United States Highway 22 parallels Interstate Highway 78 from Somerset to Warren counties.  United States Highway 202 enters from the east, Somerset County, and exits to the southwest, Pennsylvania.  The county looks like a tree.  Flemington is in the southeast quarter of the county.  Flemington is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 3.8% of the county population.  This county is in the New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island Metropolitan Statistical Area.
