The Greek Revival red brick courthouse was built in 1826 on 2nd Street and Mansfield Street.  United States Highway 46 is four blocks northeast of the site.  The courthouse was renovated in 1953, enlarged in 1961 and an Annex has been added.  Garrett D. Wall is the architect.  The facility has a tower and columns.  The county was formed on November 20, 1824 from Sussex County as the 14th county with Belvidere as the only county seat.  The county is named for Revolutionary War hero Joseph Warren.  Belvidere is Italian for “beautiful to see.”  Warren County was the birthplace for 1 New Jersey Governor, George T. Wertz. 

Warren County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Freeholders.  Seventeen Superior Court Judges serve Warren, Hunterdon, and Somerset counties.  Warren County is on the western border with Pennsylvania.  Newark, New Jersey is east and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is south of the county.  The county center is 4.7 miles East of Belvidere nearer Buttzville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Sussex, Morris, and Hunterdon counties and Pennsylvania.  

The area of the county is 358 square miles.  It is 9 out of 21 in the state.  It ranks 19 out of 21 in population in the state.  It has a density of 306.3 persons per square mile making it 18 out of 21 in the state.  Warren County has 34.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 78 cuts the southern tip of the county from Hunterdon County, south, to Pennsylvania, west.  Interstate Highway 80 crosses east to west from Sussex County to Pennsylvania.  United States Highway 22 parallels Interstate Highway 78 from Hunterdon County to Pennsylvania.  United States Highway 46 parallels Interstate Highway 80 from Sussex County to Pennsylvania.  The county looks like a snowshoe.  Belvidere is on the western border of the county.  Phillipsburg is located in the southwest corner of the county.  Belvidere is the county seat and Phillipsburg is the largest city.  Belvidere is 2.3% of the county population while Phillipsburg is 13.9% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced BEL-VI-DEER.  This county is in the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton Metropolitan Statistical Area.
