The light red brick and masonry courthouse was built in 1911 with a major remodeling in 1964.  It is located at East Duke and South 3rd streets one block south of United States Highway Business 70.  C. E. Hair was the Neo-Classical building’s designer.  There have not been other courthouses in Choctaw County since its formation on November 16, 1907 therefore Hugo is the only county seat.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  The county is named for the Native American tribe “Chahta.”  The county was formed from the Choctaw Nation as the 34th county.  Hugo is named after French novelist, Victor Hugo. 

Choctaw County government consists of a treasurer, a sheriff, an assessor, and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Six District Court Judges serve Choctaw, McCurtain and Pushmataha counties and a court clerk serves Choctaw County (judicial.)  The county is in the far southeast part of the state, southeast of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, northeast of Dallas, Texas, and on the border with Texas.  The Red River forms the southern border with Texas.  The county center is .9 miles North of Hugo.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Pushmataha and McCurtain counties and Texas and Bryan and Atoka counties. 

The area of the county is 774 square miles.  It is 42 out of 77 in the state.  It ranks 46 out of 77 in population in the state.  It has a density of 18.4 persons per square mile making it 46 out of 77 in the state.  Choctaw County has 47.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 70 goes east to west from McCurtain County to Bryan County.  United States Highway 281 crosses north to south, Pushmataha County to Texas.  The county is a flat rectangle with the southern border being the fluctuating river.  Hugo is near the center of the county.  Hugo is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 36.3% of the county population.  The county is pronounced CHAK-TA.  The county seat is pronounced HUE-GOE.
