Formed November 16, 1907 (38th county)

Creek County (71,753), Sapulpa (21,925)

The masonry Neo-Classical structure built in 1914 looks like a textbook courthouse.  No other courthouse has served the county since it was founded on November 16, 1907 as the 38th county therefore Sapulpa has always been the county seat.  The building is located at Dewey (Oklahoma State Highway 66) and Elm, two blocks east of United States Highway 75 Alternate.  The designers are Layton and Wemyss.  A 1927 County Administration Building supports the courthouse since its 1990 purchase and remodeling.  The county is named for the Creek Native American tribe.  Sapulpa is named for Creek leader, Sus pul ber.

Creek County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Eleven District Court Judges serve Creek, Okfuskee and Okmulgee counties.  The county is in northeast Oklahoma just west of Tulsa, Oklahoma.  The county center is 20.8 miles Southwest of Sapulpa nearer Bristow.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Pawnee, Osage, Tulsa, Okmulgee, Okfuskee, Lincoln, and Payne counties.

The area of the county is 956 square miles.  It is 26 out of 77 in the state.  It ranks 10 out of 77 in population in the state.  It has a density of 75.1 persons per square mile making it 12 out of 77 in the state.  Creek County has 52.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 44 transits from Tulsa County, east, into Lincoln County, west.  United States Highway 75 Alternate enters from Okmulgee County to the southeast and terminates in the county.  A “T” lying on its left side is the best description of the county shape.  Sapulpa is in the far northeast part of the county and extends into Tulsa County.  Sapulpa is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 30.6% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced SA-PULL-PA.  This county is in the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area.
