The masonry and stone Art Deco courthouse, built in 1934, stands in a square in the center of Enid.  Hawk & Parr designed the structure located at the intersection of Independence and Broadway.  United States Highway 81 is 9 blocks west of the site.  A clock tower has been located beside the courthouse and a miniature Statue of Liberty sits on the courthouse grounds along with veteran memorials.  A previous courthouse was built in Enid in 1907 following the county’s formation on January 1, 1893 thus Enid has been the only county seat.  It was the 15th county.  Garfield County is named President James A. Garfield.  The county was part of the Cherokee Outlet.  Enid was named for a character in the poem Idylls of the King by Lord Tennyson. 

Garfield County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Fourteen District Court Judges serve Garfield, Alfalfa, Blaine, Dewey, Grant, Kingfisher, Major, Woods and Woodward counties.  The county is located in north central Oklahoma to the north and west of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and south and west of Wichita, Kansas.  The county center is in Enid 3 miles North of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Grant, Kay, Noble, Logan, Kingfisher, Major, and Alfalfa counties. 

The area of the county is 1058 square miles.  It is 16 out of 77 in the state.  It ranks 12 out of 77 in population in the state.  It has a density of 59.4 persons per square mile making it 18 out of 77 in the state.  Garfield County has 90.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 60 enters from Grant County on the north, turns west in Enid, and exits into Major County.  United States Highway 64 is joined with United States Highway 60 from Grant County, splits in Enid, and goes east into Noble County.  United States Highway 81 is combined with United States Highways 60/64 in from Grant County, splits at Enid, and continues south into Kingfisher County.  United States Highway 412 is joined with United States Highway 64 entering from Noble County, east, and then joins United States Highway 60 westward into Major County.  The county is nearly a square with Enid slightly west of center.  Enid is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 81.6% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced EE-NID.  This county is in the Enid Micropolitan Statistical Area.
