The red brick Classical Revival structure of Grant County sits next to the city’s water tower.  Built in 1909 from the designs of Albert A. Trayer, it is located on the square.  United States Highway 81 is Main Street through Medford and the courthouse is at Main and Oklahoma.  Veteran memorials and a military tank are on the grounds.  It is the only documented courthouse serving Grant County since its formation on January 1, 1893, therefore Medford is the only county seat.  The county was the 16th county and originally called “L” County.  Grant County is named for President Ulysses S. Grant.  The county was part of the Cherokee Outlet.  Medford, Massachusetts is the source for the county seat’s name. 

The area of the county is 1001 square miles.  It is 20 out of 77 in the state.  It ranks 72 out of 77 in population in the state.  It has a density of 4.2 persons per square mile making it 72 out of 77 in the state.  Grant County has 67.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 60 enters from the east, Kay County but exits to the south, Garfield County.  United States Highway 64 comes from the west (Alfalfa County), joins United States Highway 60, and goes south into Garfield County.  United States Highway 81 north to south in the county coming in from Kansas, joining United States Highway 60, and exiting into Garfield County. 

Grant County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Fourteen District Court Judges serve Grant, Alfalfa, Blaine, Dewey, Garfield, Kingfisher, Major, Woods and Woodward counties.  This rectangle shaped county is north central Oklahoma on the border with Kansas.  Oklahoma City, Oklahoma is south and Wichita, Kansas is north.  The Salt Fork of the Arkansas River crosses the southern part of the county from west to east.  The county center is in Medford .4 miles North-Northwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Kansas and Kay, Noble, Garfield, and Alfalfa counties.  Medford is slightly east of center.  Medford is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 21.9% of the county population.
