The Modern courthouse of Johnston County was built in 1992.  The building is located on Main Street (United States Highway 377) at Capitol.  Badgett & Coover-Clark are the designers.  Since its founding on November 16, 1907, Tishomingo has been the county seat.  There are veteran memorials on the grounds.  The 1898 Cherokee Nation capitol served as the original county courthouse.  Johnston County was named for Douglas H. Johnston, Governor of the Chickasaw Nation.  The county comes from the Chickasaw Nation as the 47th county.  Tishomingo was named for the Chickasaw chief.  Johnston County is the birthplace of 1 Oklahoma Governor, Johnston Murray. 

Johnston County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Seven District Court Judges serve Johnston, Carter, Love, Marshall and Murray counties.  The county is located in south central Oklahoma, southeast of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and southwest of McAlester, Oklahoma.  The county center is 6.5 miles Northeast of Tishomingo.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Pontotoc, Coal, Atoka, Bryan, Marshall, Carter, and Murray counties. 

The area of the county is 645 square miles.  It is 57 out of 77 in the state.  It ranks 56 out of 77 in population in the state.  It has a density of 15.9 persons per square mile making it 53 out of 77 in the state.  Johnston County has 51.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 377 enters from Pontotoc County on the north and exits south into Marshall County.  The county is rectangular with an added box on top.  The Wildhorse River crosses the southwest corner of the county.  Tishomingo is in the extreme south of the county.  Tishomingo is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 30.2% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced TIS-HOE-MIN-GOE.
