The 1914 masonry Classical Revival courthouse is located in middle of the square at Main and Second Streets.  United States Highway 70 is one block west of the location.  The building’s designer was Jewell Hicks.  This is the only permanent courthouse that has served the county thus Madill is the only county seat.  Veteran memorials and a gazebo are on the grounds.  Marshall County was formed on November 16, 1907 as the 52nd county.  The county was originally part of Pickens County in the Chickasaw Nation.  The county was named by a member to the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention, George A. Henshaw, for his mother’s maiden name, Marshall.  The county seat was named for George A. Madill, railroad attorney.  Marshall County is the birthplace of 1 Oklahoma Governor, Raymond D. Gary. 

Marshall County government consists of a treasurer, a sheriff, an assessor, and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Seven District Court Judges serve Marshall, Carter, Johnston, Love, and Murray counties and a court clerk serves Major County (judicial.)  The county is in the south-central part of the state along the border with Texas.  The county center is 5.8 miles South of Madill nearer Kingston.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Johnston and Bryan counties and Texas and Love and Carter counties. 

The area of the county is 371 square miles.  It is 77 out of 77 in the state.  It ranks 44 out of 77 in population in the state.  It has a density of 41.2 persons per square mile making it 28 out of 77 in the state.  Marshall County has 40.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 70 crosses from Bryan County in the east into Carter County in the west.  United States Highway 377 enters from the north, Johnston County, and exits to the south, Texas.  A bulge to the east and one to the south add to the square shape for the county.  The Red River is the southern border and the Wildhorse River is the eastern border.  Madill is located in the northern quarter of the county.  Madill is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 25.5% of the county population.
