McIntosh County (18,944), Eufaula (2,768), Checotah (3,022)

The canopied Classical Revival courthouse sits at 1st and Pine streets, one block west of United States Highway Business 69.  Layton, Hicks & Forsyth designed the 1926 red brick structure.  However, this is the only courthouse in the county since on November 16, 1907 founding and Eufaula has always been the county seat.  The county was originally part of the Cherokee Nation and became the 27th county.  McIntosh County is named for a well-known Creek family.  Eufaula was named for the Alabama town, which is named for the Native American phase “they split up here and went to other places.” 

The area of the county is 620 square miles.  It is 62 out of 77 in the state.  It ranks 42 out of 77 in population in the state.  It has a density of 30.6 persons per square mile making it 36 out of 77 in the state.  McIntosh County has 32.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 40 crosses from east to west, Muskogee County to Okmulgee County.  United States Highway 69 crosses from northeast to southwest across the county going from Muskogee County into Pittsburg County.  United States Highway 266 parallels Interstate Highway 40 from Muskogee County to Okmulgee County. 

McIntosh County government consists of a treasurer, a sheriff, an assessor, and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Five District Court Judges serve McIntosh and Pittsburg counties and a court clerk serves McIntosh County (judicial.)  Two major forks of the Canadian River join the main stream in the middle of the county.  The main channel of the river forms the southern border.  The county center is 15.8 miles Northwest of Eufaula nearer Fame.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Muskogee, Haskell, Pittsburg, Hughes, Okfuskee, and Okmulgee counties.  The western border gives the county a 3-step edge while the southern border shortens the county length from west to east.  Eufaula is east of center and on the southern border of the county.  Checotah is located in the northeast quarter of the county.  Eufaula is the county seat and Checotah is the largest city.  Eufaula is 14.6% of the county population while Checotah is 16.0% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced UE-FALL-A.  The largest city is pronounced CHE-KO-TA.
