Layton, Hicks and Forsyth designed the governmental shape of the Renaissance Revival and Late Nineteenth Century Revival 1928 masonry courthouse.  It is located at the intersection Court and State streets.  United States Highway Business 62 is four blocks east.  A courthouse was built in 1907 to serve the county since its November 16, 1907 establishment.  It was the 58th county.  Muskogee has always been the county seat.  The Muscogee Creek Native Americans are the source for both the county and county seat’s name.  Muskogee County is the birthplace of 1 Oklahoma Governor, J. Howard Edmonson. 

Muskogee County government consists of a treasurer, a sheriff, an assessor, and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Five District Court Judges serve Muskogee, Adair, Cherokee, Sequoyah and Wagoner counties and a court clerk serves Muskogee County (judicial.)  The county is situated in the northeast Oklahoma to the southeast of Tulsa, Oklahoma.  The Arkansas River makes up the majority of the eastern border.  The county center is 5.3 miles Southwest of Muskogee.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Wagoner, Cherokee, Sequoyah, Haskell, McIntosh, and Okmulgee counties. 

The area of the county is 814 square miles.  It is 37 out of 77 in the state.  It ranks 11 out of 77 in population in the state.  It has a density of 81.5 persons per square mile making it 11 out of 77 in the state.  Muskogee County has 69.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 40 crosses the southeast part of the county from east to west, Sequoyah County to McIntosh County.  United States Highway 62 enters from the east, Cherokee County, and exits to the west, Okmulgee County.  United States Highway 64 comes in from Tulsa County on the northwest and goes into Sequoyah County on the southeast.  United States Highway 69 crosses north to south from Wagoner County to McIntosh County.  The county has a 3-step western border and a wandering eastern border.  It stretches from southeast to northwest.  The City of Muskogee is on the river north and east of center.  Muskogee is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 55.6% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced MUS-KOE-GEE.  This county is in the Muskogee Micropolitan Statistical Area.
