The 10-story concrete and masonry Art Deco courthouse sits at Park and Kerr avenues.  Interstate Highway 40 passes seven blocks to the south.  It was built in 1936 from the design of Layton & Forsyth.  There have been two courthouses since the May 2, 1890 county organization the earlier one was in 1902, both in Oklahoma City, the only county seat.  A County Administration Building was built in 1967.  The county was an original county (8th county) and designated County Number 2.  Oklahoma County and City were named for the Oklahoma Territory with is the Native American phase “Land of the Red People.”  Oklahoma County is the birthplace of 1 Oklahoma Governor, David Hall.  The geographical center of Oklahoma is 8 miles north of Oklahoma City in the county.  The county center is in Oklahoma City 5.6 miles North-Northeast of the city center. 

Oklahoma County government consists of a treasurer, a sheriff, an assessor, and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Thirty District Court Judges and a court clerk serve Oklahoma County (judicial.)  The county is surrounded clockwise by Logan, Lincoln, Pottawatomie, Cleveland, Canadian, and Kingfisher counties.  The Oklahoma state capitol is located in this county.  The county is a square.  Oklahoma City dominates the county but the center of the city is in the southwest quarter of the county.  It extends into Canadian, Cleveland, and Pottawatomie counties.  Oklahoma City is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 85.5% of the county population. 

The area of the county is 709 square miles.  It is 51 out of 77 in the state.  It ranks 1 out of 77 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1123.5 persons per square mile making it 2 out of 77 in the state.  Oklahoma County has 97.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 35 passes through the county north to south from Logan County to Cleveland County.  Interstate Highway 40 goes east to west, Pottawatomie County to Canadian County.  Interstate Highway 44 diagonals from Lincoln County, northeast, to Cleveland County, southwest.  United States Highway 62 enters from Lincoln County (east), joins Interstate Highway 44, and exits into Cleveland County (southwest).  United States Highway 77 parallels Interstate Highway 35 from Logan County to Cleveland County.  United States Highway 270 is joined with Interstate Highway 40 across the county from Pottawatomie to Canadian counties.  United States Highway 277 begins in the county and jointly enters Cleveland County with United States Highway 62.  This county is in the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
