The Art Deco style courthouse was built in 1935 at the corner of Southwest B Street and Southwest 3rd Street. Its site is east of United States Highway 271 by one block. Forrest Butler was the architect of this masonry building. Veteran memorials are on the grounds. A 1910 courthouse was also homed in Antlers, the only county seat. These are the only courthouses since the November 16, 1907 county founding as the 65th county. Originally the county was part of the Choctaw Nation. A Choctaw leader gave Pushmataha County its name. Antlers is named for antlers being nailed to trees by the local Native Americans.
Pushmataha County government consists of a treasurer, a sheriff, an assessor, and a clerk (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Six District Court Judges serve Pushmataha, Choctaw, and McCurtain counties and a court clerk serves Pushmataha County (judicial.) The county is the southeast part of the state. The county center is 28.9 miles Northeast of Antlers nearer Nashoba. The county is surrounded clockwise by Latimer, Le Flore, McCurtain, Choctaw, Atoka, and Pittsburg counties.
The area of the county is 1397 square miles. It is 7 out of 77 in the state. It ranks 55 out of 77 in population in the state. It has a density of 7.7 persons per square mile making it 66 out of 77 in the state. Pushmataha County has 28.8% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 271 enters from Le Flore County in the northeast and diagonally crosses into Choctaw County on the south. The county is bowtie shaped turned 45-degrees to the east. Antlers is in the extreme southwest corner. Antlers is the county seat and the largest city. It is 20.6% of the county population.
