An Art Deco building, the courthouse was built in 1939.  Joseph I. Davis designed the facility.  An 1897 courthouse was also located in the city of Wagoner, the only county seat.  A large mural of a train sits east of this yellow brick structure.  Oklahoma State Highway 51 is Cherokee Street with the courthouse at Casaver Avenue.  The building has been enlarged a number of times and it was renovated in 2006.  Wagoner County was organized on November 16, 1907 as the 74th county.  The county was originally part of Cherokee Nation.  Wagoner gets its name from a local train worker, “Big Foot” Wagoner. 

Wagoner County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Five District Court Judges serve Wagoner, Adair, Cherokee, Muskogee, and Sequoyah counties.  The Arkansas River is the majority of the southern border of this county located southeast of Tulsa, Oklahoma.  The Illinois River is a large part of the eastern border.  The county center is 11 miles Southwest of Wagoner nearer Porter.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Mayes, Cherokee, Muskogee, Tulsa, and Rogers counties. 

The area of the county is 563 square miles.  It is 69 out of 77 in the state.  It ranks 8 out of 77 in population in the state.  It has a density of 143.8 persons per square mile making it 5 out of 77 in the state.  Wagoner County has 50.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 64 cuts the far northwest tip passing from Tulsa County, north, to Muskogee County, south.  The county is shaped like a 45-degree turned bowtie.  Wagoner is slightly east and north of the county’s center.  Coweta is in the southwest corner of the county.  Wagoner is the county seat and Coweta is the largest city.  Wagoner is 9.4% of the county population while Coweta is 11.9% of the county population.  This county is in the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area.
