The 1954 masonry and white stucco building is located on State Street at 3rd Street.  United States Highway 30 is one block north of the location.  Roald, Schmeer and Harrington provided the Modern designs.  There was a 1937 courthouse earlier in Hood River, the only county seat.  Hood River County was established on June 23, 1908 from Wasco County as the 34th county.  The county and county seat are named for the river which is named for Lord Samuel Hood. 

Hood River County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Commissioners.  Four District Court Judges serve Hood River, Gilliam, Sherman, Wasco, and Wheeler counties.  Hood River County is on the northern border with Washington.  The Columbia River forms its northern border.  Portland, Oregon is west and Pendleton, Oregon is east of the county.  The county center is 14 miles South-Southwest of Hood River nearer Parkdale.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Washington and Wasco, Clackamas, and Multnomah counties. 

The area of the county is 522 square miles.  It is 35 out of 36 in the state.  It ranks 26 out of 36 in population in the state.  It has a density of 45.9 persons per square mile making it 16 out of 36 in the state.  Hood River County has 40.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 84 goes east to west in the county from Wasco County to Multnomah County.  The highest point in Oregon, Mount Hood, is on the county’s western border.  The county looks like a backward capital letter P.  The City of Hood River is located on the northeastern border of the county.  Hood River is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 34.7% of the county population.  This county is in the Hood River Micropolitan Statistical Area.
