The red brick and masonry Modern structure was constructed in 1954.  The facility is on Olive Street at Nye Street.  United States Highway 101 is one block east of the facility.  Burns, Bear, McNeil, and Schneider are the building designers.  The building has been enlarged.  Toledo had the previous courthouse built in 1899.  The county was formed on February 20, 1893 from Benton and Polk counties as the 32nd county.  Toledo was the county seat until 1954.  The county is named for United States President Abraham Lincoln.  Newport is named for Newport, Rhode Island. 

Lincoln County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Three District Court Judges serve Lincoln County.  Lincoln County is in the northwest part of the state.  Portland, Oregon is northeast and Eugene, Oregon is southeast of the county.  The Pacific Ocean forms its western border.  The county center is 8.7 miles East-Southeast of Newport nearer Toledo.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Tillamook, Polk, Benton, and Lane counties and the Pacific Ocean. 

The area of the county is 980 square miles.  It is 27 out of 36 in the state.  It ranks 18 out of 36 in population in the state.  It has a density of 51.4 persons per square mile making it 14 out of 36 in the state.  Lincoln County has 58.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 20 enters the county from the east, Benton County, and terminates.  United States Highway 101 goes north to south from Tillamook County to Lane County.  Lincoln County looks like a capital letter L with an extra foot attached.  Newport is located on the central western coast of the county.  Newport is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 20.3% of the county population.
