The red brick French Second Empire courthouse was built in 1882 and remodeled in 1923. The courthouse is at the intersection of Center and Lloyd streets. United States Highway 422 is one block north of the location. Milton Earl Beebe provided the building designs. An Office Building and District Courthouse in Ebensburg and a District Courthouse in Cresson support the main courthouse. There was also an 1830 version also in Ebensburg, the only county seat. The county was formed on March 26, 1804 from parts of Bedford, Huntingdon, and Somerset counties as the 37th county. The county name is derived from the ancient term for Wales. Ebensburg is named for Eben Lloyd, the child of a settler.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is west and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is east of the county. The county center is 1.3 miles West of Ebensburg. The county is surrounded clockwise by Clearfield, Blair, Bedford, Somerset, Westmoreland, and Indiana counties.
The area of the county is 693 square miles. It is 31 out of 67 in the state. It ranks 26 out of 67 in population in the state. It has a density of 192.6 persons per square mile making it 27 out of 67 in the state. Cambria County has 44.0% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 22 goes east to west in the county from Blair County to Indiana County. United States Highway 219 passes north to south from Clearfield County to Somerset County. United States Highway 422 originates and exits west into Indiana County. The county is a rectangle slanting east. Ebensburg is located near the center of the county. Johnstown is in the southwest quarter of the county. Ebensburg is the county seat and Johnstown is the largest city. Ebensburg is 2.6% of the county population while Johnstown is 13.8% of the county population. The county is pronounced KAM-BREE-A. The county seat is pronounced EE-BENS-BERG. This county is in the Johnstown Metropolitan Statistical Area.
