The red brick Romanesque courthouse was built in 1890 and enlarged in 2000.  The courthouse is at 5^th and Broad streets.  Pennsylvania State Highway 120 is located one block south of the site.  A. B. Wagner provided the designs.  Cameron County was established on March 29, 1860 from parts of McKean, Potter, Elk, and Clinton counties as the 66^th county.  Emporium has always been the county seat.  The county is named for United States Senator Simon Cameron.  The county seat is presumably a descriptive word for the commercial importance of the town. 

Cameron County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  One Common Pleas Court Judge and One Magistrate Court Judge serve Cameron and Elk counties.  The county is in northwest Pennsylvania.  Erie, Pennsylvania is northwest and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is southwest of the county.  The county center is 9.2 miles Southeast of Emporium nearer Cameron.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Potter, Clinton, Clearfield, Elk, and McKean counties. 

The area of the county is 399 square miles.  It is 56 out of 67 in the state.  It ranks 67 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 11.4 persons per square mile making it 67 out of 67 in the state.  Cameron County has 43.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county resembles the number 7.  Emporium is located in the northwest quarter of the county.  Emporium is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 42.3% of the county population.
