The classic stone Romanesque courthouse was built in 1890.  The structure is on Main Street at Court Street.  United States Highway 40 Business is Main Street in this part of the town.  E. M. Butz & William Kauffman provided the courthouse designs.  The building was renovated in 1903.  An Administrative Building was built in 1928.  The county was organized on September 26, 1783 and taken from Westmoreland County as the 13^th county.  Uniontown has always been the county seat.  The county is named for American Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette.  Uniontown was founded on July 4, 1776 and thus is named for the concept. 

The area of the county is 798 square miles.  It is 24 out of 67 in the state.  It ranks 27 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 161.4 persons per square mile making it 32 out of 67 in the state.  Fayette County has 27.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 40 enters the county from the east, Somerset County, and exits to the west, Washington County.  United States Highway 119 passes north to south from Westmoreland County to Greene County. 

Fayette County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Seven Common Pleas Court Judges and Nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Fayette County.  The county is on the southwest border with both Maryland and West Virginia.  The Monongahela River forms its western border.  Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is northwest and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is northeast of the county.  The county looks like a bag of popcorn.  The county center is 5 miles Northeast of Uniontown nearer Mount Braddock.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Westmoreland and Somerset counties and Maryland and West Virginia and Greene and Washington counties.  Uniontown is located in the western third of the county.  Uniontown is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 7.8% of the county population.  This county is in the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area.
