A red brick Modern courthouse in Indiana was built in 1968 to replace an 1869 building.  The courthouse is on Philadelphia and 8th streets.  Philadelphia Street is Pennsylvania State Highway 286.  Laurie & Green are the courthouse architects.  The county was formed on January 1, 1803 from parts of Westmoreland and Clearfield counties as the 36th county with Indiana as the only county seat.  The county and county seat are named for the Indiana Territory.  Indiana County is the birthplace of 1 Pennsylvania governor, John S. Fisher. 

Indiana County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two Common Pleas Court Judges and Five Magistrate Court Judges serve Indiana County.  Indiana County is in the western part of the state.  Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is southwest and Erie, Pennsylvania is northwest of the county.  The county center is 5.4 miles North-Northeast of Indiana nearer Ernest.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Jefferson, Clearfield, Cambria, Westmoreland, and Armstrong counties. 

The area of the county is 834 square miles.  It is 20 out of 67 in the state.  It ranks 35 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 99.8 persons per square mile making it 40 out of 67 in the state.  Indiana County has 27.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 22 cuts the southern part of the county from east to west from Cambria County to Westmoreland County.  United States Highway 119 enters from Jefferson County, north, and joins United States Highway 22 into Westmoreland County.  United States Highway 422 crosses east to west from Cambria County to Armstrong County.  Indiana County resembles a lazy capital letter J.  The City of Indiana is in the southwest quarter of the county.  Indiana is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 16.9% of the county population.  This county is in the Indiana Micropolitan Statistical Area.
