The Modern red brick building is the 1970 courthouse for Lycoming County.  The courthouse is on 3^rd Street at Court Street.  United States Highway 15 is two blocks south of the location.  Wagner-Hartman-Associates are the architects.  A County Office Building augments the courthouse.  An 1804 and a classic 1860 facility were the earlier versions.  Lycoming County was formed on April 13, 1795 from Northumberland County as the 22^nd county with Williamsport as the only county seat.  The county is named for a local creek.  The county seat is possibly named for settler, William Hepburn. 

Lycoming County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Six Common Pleas Court Judges and Five Magistrate Court Judges serve Lycoming County.  Lycoming County is in northern Pennsylvania.  Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is south and Erie, Pennsylvania is northwest of the county.  The West Branch of the Susquehanna River flows through the county.  The county center is 2.7 miles North-Northeast of Williamsport.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Tioga, Bradford, Sullivan, Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, Union, Clinton, and Potter counties. 

The area of the county is 1244 square miles.  It is 1 out of 67 in the state.  It ranks 29 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 91.8 persons per square mile making it 42 out of 67 in the state.  Lycoming County has 44.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 180 originates in the county and heads south into Northumberland County.  United States Highway 15 passes north to south from Tioga County to Union County.  United States Highway 220 crosses from Sullivan County, east, to Clinton County, west.  The county resembles a fat cowboy boot.  Williamsport is located in the southern quarter of the county.  Williamsport is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 24.3% of the county population.  The county is pronounced LIE-KUM-ING.  This county is in the Williamsport Metropolitan Statistical Area.
