The 1856 red brick courthouse for Snyder County sits at Market and Main streets.  United States Highway 522 turns the corner in front of the courthouse.  The architect is J. F. Stetler for this Classical Revival courthouse.  The building was enlarged in 1867 and rebuilt in 1915.  An Annex was added in 1977.  There was an 1855 version earlier.  The county was formed on March 2, 1855 from Union County as the 65th county.  Middleburg has always been the county seat. 

Snyder County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Four Common Pleas Court Judges and Two Magistrate Court Judges serve Snyder and Union counties.  Snyder County is in central Pennsylvania.  The Susquehanna River forms its eastern border.  Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is south and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is southeast of the county.  The county center is 5.9 miles South of Middleburg.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Union, Northumberland, Juniata, and Mifflin counties.  The county is named for Governor Simon Snyder.  Middleburg is a geographical name for its location on Middle Creek. 

The area of the county is 332 square miles.  It is 63 out of 67 in the state.  It ranks 53 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 119.7 persons per square mile making it 37 out of 67 in the state.  Snyder County has 28.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highways 11/15 travel through the county from north to south from Union County to Juniata County.  United States Highway 522 originates and goes southwest into Mifflin County.  The county looks like an ice cream cone pointing east.  Middleburg is near the center of the county.  Selingsgrove is located on the northeast border of the county.  Middleburg is the county seat and Selingsgrove is the largest city.  Middleburg is 3.3% of the county population while Selingsgrove is 14.4% of the county population.  The largest city is pronounced SEE-LINGS-GROEV. This county is in the Selingsgrove Micropolitan Statistical Area.
