The 1922 tan brick structure is on Pine Street at Memorial Avenue.  United States Highway 278 is Pine Street in this part of the town.  The courthouse was remodeled and enlarged in 2004.  G. Lloyd Preache designed this Neo-Classical facility.  The courthouse burnt in 1998 and rebuilt in 2005.  Watson, Tate, and Savory designed the rebuild.  The structure features columns with a fountain and veteran memorials on the grounds.  The county was formed on January 1, 1919 from parts of Barnwell and Hampton counties as the 46th and final county with Allendale as the only county seat.  The county and county seat are named for Postmaster Paul H. Allen. 

Allendale County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Council Members.  Two Circuit Court Judges and Five Family Court Judges serve Allendale, Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper counties.  The county is on the southwest border with Georgia.  The Savannah River forms its western border.  Charleston, South Carolina is east and Columbia, South Carolina is northeast of the county.  The county center is in Allendale 1.4 miles Southwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Bamberg, Colleton, and Hampton counties and Georgia and Barnwell County. 

The area of the county is 412 square miles.  It is 40 out of 46 in the state.  It ranks 46 out of 46 in population in the state.  It has a density of 19.5 persons per square mile making it 46 out of 46 in the state.  Allendale County has 54.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 278 travels through the county from north to southeast from Barnwell County to Hampton County.  United States Highway 301 enters from Bamberg County, northeast, and exits to Georgia, southwest.  United States Highway 321 crosses north to south from Bamberg County to Hampton County.  The county shape resembles the head of a bull.  The City of Allendale is located in the northern quarter of the county.  Allendale is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 33.6% of the county population.
