The 1911 dark red brick Classical Revival structure sits at the intersection of Main Street between 3rd and 5th avenues.  South Carolina State Highway 34 is Main Street.  William Augustus Edwards is the courthouse designer.  The building was renovated in 1998.  The structure sits on a square and features columns.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  The county was formed on January 1, 1910 from Marlboro County as the 43rd county with Dillon as the only county seat.  Dillon County and its county seat were named for settler J. W. Dillon. 

Dillon County government consists of a sheriff and 7 Council Members.  Two Circuit Court Judges and Four Family Court Judges serve Dillon, Chesterfield, Darlington, and Marlboro counties.  The county is on the eastern border with North Carolina.  Columbia, South Carolina is west and Charleston, South Carolina is southwest of the county.  The county center is 5 miles South of Dillon nearer Floydale.  The county is surrounded clockwise by North Carolina and Horry, Marion, Florence, and Marlboro counties. 

The area of the county is 407 square miles.  It is 42 out of 46 in the state.  It ranks 33 out of 46 in population in the state.  It has a density of 69.5 persons per square mile making it 24 out of 46 in the state.  Dillon County has 30.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 95 enters the county from North Carolina, east, and exits into Florence County, southwest.  United States Highway 301 comes from North Carolina and goes into Marion County, south.  United States Highway 501 is joined with United States Highway 301 from North Carolina, splits and continues southeast into Marion County.  The county is an overall triangle.  The City of Dillon is located near the center of the county.  Dillon is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 23.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Dillon Micropolitan Statistical Area.
