The red/brown brick Neo Classical Revival facility was erected in 1838.  It is located at Penn and Main streets.  Main Street is United States Highway 25 in this part of town.  Charles Beck and Robert Mills are the architects.  The building was enlarged in 1933 and renovated in 1997.  It features columns with veteran memorials across the street.  A County Government Building was added in 1975.  Edgefield County was organized on January 1, 1785 as the 9th county with Edgefield as the only county seat.  The county and its county seat names are reportedly geographically descriptive.  Edgefield County is the birthplace for 5 South Carolina Governors, Andrew Pickens, Jr., Pierce M. Butler, John C. Sheppard, Benjamin R. Tillman and J. Strom Thurmond. 

Edgefield County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Council Members.  Two Circuit Court Judges and Two Family Court Judges serve Edgefield, Lexington, McCormick, Saluda counties.  Edgefield County is on the western border with Georgia.  The Savannah River forms its western border.  Columbia, South Carolina is east and Greenville, South Carolina is northeast of the county.  The county center is 2 miles Northwest of Edgefield.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Saluda and Aiken counties and Georgia and McCormick and Greenwood counties. 

The area of the county is 507 square miles.  It is 35 out of 46 in the state.  It ranks 36 out of 46 in population in the state.  It has a density of 50.6 persons per square mile making it 32 out of 46 in the state.  Edgefield County has 18.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 25 enters the county from the north, McCormick County, and exits to the southeast, Aiken County.  United States Highway 378 cuts the northwest from Saluda County, north, to McCormick County, northwest.  The county resembles a pile of leaves leaning northwest.  The City of Edgefield is located near the center of the county.  Edgefield is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 9.1% of the county population.  This county is in the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area.
