The Modern red brick and glass structure was erected in 2012 on Main Street at Dunlap Street.  United States Highway 521 is Main Street.  Stevens & Wilkinson are the architects.  It features columns and veteran memorials on the grounds.  Murals of county heroes are on local building side walls.  A County Administration Building was built in 2003 to support the courthouse.  There was an 1828 courthouse earlier in Lancaster, the only county seat.  The county was established on January 1, 1785 as the 11th county.  Lancaster County and its county seat are named for Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  Lancaster County is the birthplace for 2 South Carolina Governors, Stephen D. Miller and James H. Hodges. 

Lancaster County government consists of a sheriff and 7 Council Members.  Two Circuit Court Judges and Two Family Court Judges serve Lancaster, Chester, and Fairfield counties.  Lancaster County is on the northern border with North Carolina.  Columbia, South Carolina is southwest and Greenville, South Carolina is west of the county. 

The area of the county is 555 square miles.  It is 31 out of 46 in the state.  It ranks 16 out of 46 in population in the state.  It has a density of 173.0 persons per square mile making it 13 out of 46 in the state.  Lancaster County has 12.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 521 enters the county from North Carolina, northwest, and exits into Kershaw County, south.  United States Highway 601 comes from Chesterfield County, east, and joins United States Highway 521 into Kershaw County.  Andrew Jackson, the 7th President, was born in this county.  The county resembles a chair.  The City of Lancaster is located in the southwest quarter of the county.  Lancaster is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 8.9% of the county population.  The county center is 6.1 miles East of Lancaster nearer Antioch.  The county is surrounded clockwise by North Carolina and Chesterfield, Kershaw, Fairfield, York, and Chester counties.  This county is in the Lancaster Micropolitan Statistical Area.
