The columned red/brown brick facility was erected in 1923. The courthouse is on Mine Street at Augusta Street. United States Highway 221 is Mine Street in this part of the town. G. Lloyd Preacher & Company designed this Neo-Classical Revival courthouse. It sits on a hill with columns and veteran memorials on the grounds. McCormick County was founded on January 1, 1916 from parts of Abbeville, Edgefield, and Greenwood counties as the 45th county with McCormick as the only county seat. The county and county seat are named for Inventor Cyrus McCormick.

The county center is 4.2 miles Southeast of McCormick nearer Plum Branch. The county is surrounded clockwise by Greenwood and Edgefield counties and Georgia and Abbeville County.

United States Highway 221 enters from Greenwood County and exits to Edgefield County. United States Highway 378 passes east to west from Saluda County to Georgia. McCormick County resembles the head of an anteater. The City of McCormick is located in the northern half of the county. McCormick is the county seat and the largest city. It is 23.4% of the county population.
