The Greek Revival column structure was built in 1914 and remodeled and enlarged in 1955.  A Justice Center was built in 1994.  There was also an 1823 courthouse in York, the only county seat.  York County was formed on January 1, 1785 as the 20th county.  The county and county seat are named for York, England.  The facility is near the intersection of Congress and Liberty streets.  Congress Street is United States Highway 321.  William Augustus Edwards designed the tan brick courthouse.  A Government Center was added in 2019.  A Family Courthouse was also built in 2019 in Rock Hill. 

The area of the county is 696 square miles.  It is 22 out of 46 in the state.  It ranks 7 out of 46 in population in the state.  It has a density of 405.3 persons per square mile making it 3 out of 46 in the state.  York County has 45.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 77 passes north to south in the county from North Carolina to Chester County.  United States Highway 21 parallels Interstate Highway 77 from North Carolina to Chester County.  United States Highway 321 comes from North Carolina, north, and goes to Chester County, south. 

York County government consists of a sheriff and 7 Council Members.  Four Circuit Court Judges and Six Family Court Judges serve York and Union counties.  York County is on the northern border with North Carolina.  Greenville, South Carolina is west and Columbia, South Carolina is south of the county.  The county center is in York .8 miles Southwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by North Carolina and Lancaster, Chester, Union, and Cherokee counties.  The county resembles a sailor’s cap.  The City of York is located in the western third of the county.  Rock Hill is in the eastern quarter of the county.  York is the county seat and Rock Hill is the largest city.  York is 3.0% of the county population while Rock Hill is 26.4% of the county population.  This county is in the Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord Metropolitan Statistical Area.
