The Modern building was constructed in 1962 of light tan brick. It replaced a wooden courthouse. It is located on 2nd Street between Main and Humboldt avenues. United States Highway 83 is Main Avenue. Walter J. Dixon is the designer. Le Grace was the first county seat until 1888 when Mound City assumed the seat. Campbell County was organized on January 8, 1873 as the 15th county. It is named for Legislator Norman B. Campbell. The county seat is named for local Native American mounds.
Campbell County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Commissioners. Four Circuit Court Judges and One Magistrate Court Judge serve Campbell, Brown, Day, Edmunds, Faulk, Marshall, McPherson, Roberts, Spink, and Walworth counties. Campbell County is on the northern border with North Dakota. The Missouri River forms its western border. Pierre, South Dakota is south and Rapid City, South Dakota is southwest of the county. The county center is 4.4 miles North-Northeast of Mound City. The county is surrounded clockwise by North Dakota and McPherson, Walworth, and Corson counties.
The area of the county is 736 square miles. It is 44 out of 66 in the state. It ranks 63 out of 66 in population in the state. It has a density of 1.9 persons per square mile making it 56 out of 66 in the state. Campbell County has 52.0% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 83 crosses the county from north to south from North Dakota to Walworth County. The county is a rectangle with the western end eaten away. Mound City is located slightly south of center in the county. Herreid is in the northern third of the county. Mound City is the county seat and Herreid is the largest city. Mound City is 4.9% of the county population while Herreid is 30.1% of the county population. The largest city is pronounced HAER-RID.
