A Renaissance and Classical Revival courthouse was built of tan brick and brown masonry in 1905 and remodeled in 1934. The structure is on a square at 9th, Lafoon, 10th, and Faulkton avenues. United States Highway 212 is one block north of the site. W. R. Parsons and Sons are the architects. The county was formed on January 8, 1873 as the 20th county. La Foon was the first county seat until 1886 when Faulkton became the seat. The county and its county seat are named for Governor Andrew Faulk.

The county is in northern South Dakota. Sioux Falls, South Dakota is southeast and Pierre, South Dakota is southwest of the county. The county center is 5 miles Northwest of Faulkton. The county is surrounded clockwise by Edmunds, Brown, Spink, Hand, Hyde, and Potter counties.
The area of the county is 1000 square miles. It is 31 out of 66 in the state. It ranks 57 out of 66 in population in the state. It has a density of 2.1 persons per square mile making it 53 out of 66 in the state. Faulk County has 39.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 212 passes east to west in the county from Spink County to Potter County. The county is an overall rectangle. Faulkton is located in the southern third of the county. Faulkton is the county seat and the largest city. It is 39.1% of the county population.
