This excellent Renaissance building was built in 1908. It is on a square at Vanderhorck Street, 9th Avenue, 8th Street, and 10th Avenue. South Dakota State Highway 10 passes in front of the building as Vanderhorck Street. Bell & Detweiller are the masonry and stone building designers. The building features a tower and the grounds have veterans’ memorials. The county was created on May 2, 1885 as the 57th county with Britton as the only county seat. It is named for Marshall Vincent, settler. Britton is named for railroad officer, Isaac Britton. Marshall County is the birthplace of 1 South Dakota governor, Frank L. Farrar.

The county is located on the northeast border with North Dakota. Sioux Falls, South Dakota is southeast and Pierre, South Dakota is southwest of the county. The county center is 11.4 miles Southeast of Britton. The county is surrounded clockwise by North Dakota and Roberts, Day, and Brown counties.
The area of the county is 839 square miles. It is 36 out of 66 in the state. It ranks 37 out of 66 in population in the state. It has a density of 5.1 persons per square mile making it 35 out of 66 in the state. Marshall County has 45.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county. This rectangular county has an added foot on the southeast corner. Britton is located in the northwest quarter of the county. Britton is the county seat and the largest city. It is 28.2% of the county population.
