The red brick and masonry Classical Revival facility was built in 1926. It is located on 7th Avenue, 2nd Street, 8th Avenue, and 3rd Street. Seventh Avenue is United States Highway 281. Veterans’ memorials are on the grounds. There was a classier 1887 courthouse in Redfield. Toltz, King, and Day were the architects. The county was founded on January 8, 1873 as the 34th county. Old Ashton (1879), Ashton (1885), and Redfield (1886) have all served as the county seat. The county is named for S. L. Spink, territorial Congressional representative. Redfield is named for railroad officer J. B. Redfield. Spink County is the birthplace of 1 South Dakota governor, Harvey L. Wollman.

Four Circuit Court Judges and One Magistrate Court Judge serve Spink, Brown, Campbell, Day, Edmunds, Faulk, Marshall, McPherson, Roberts, and Walworth counties. The county is in the northeast part of South Dakota. Pierre, South Dakota is southwest and Sioux Falls, South Dakota is southeast of the county. The county center is 11.7 miles Northeast of Redfield nearer Frankfort. The county is surrounded clockwise by Brown, Day, Clark, Beadle, Hand, Faulk, and Edmunds counties.

United States Highway 212 crosses the county from east to west from Clark County to Hand County. United States Highway 281 enters from the north, Brown County, and exits to the south, Beadle County. The county is a rectangle. Redfield is located in the southwest quarter of the county. Redfield is the county seat and the largest city. It is 34.8% of the county population.
