The dark red brick Neo-Classical courthouse was built in 1927. It is located on Kentucky Street at Main Street. United States Highway 25 West is two blocks north. Barge, Waggoner, Sumner & Cannon provided the building designs. The building was enlarged in 1964. The facility grounds have veterans’ memorials and the building has columns. There were 1808, 1855, and 1885 courthouses previously in Jacksboro, the only county seat. Campbell County was founded on September 11, 1806 from parts of Anderson and Claiborne counties as the 26th county. It was named for Revolutionary War Colonel Arthur Campbell. Jacksboro is named for Judge John Jack.
Campbell County government consists of a sheriff, a County Mayor, and 15 Commissioners. One Circuit Court Judge, One Chancery Court Judge, and One General Court Judge serve Campbell, Claiborne, Fentress, Scott, and Union counties. The county is situated on the northern border with Kentucky. Knoxville, Tennessee is south and Nashville, Tennessee is southwest of the county. The county center is 10.3 miles North of Jacksboro nearer La Follette. The county is surrounded clockwise by Kentucky and Claiborne, Union, Anderson, and Scott counties.

It has a density of 81.8 persons per square mile making it 44 out of 95 in the state. Campbell County has 36.0% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 75 goes north to south in the county from Kentucky to Anderson County. United States Highway 25 West parallels Interstate Highway 75 from Kentucky to Anderson County. The county resembles a bag of marbles. Jacksboro is located in the southwest quarter of the county. La Follette is near the center of the county. Jacksboro is the county seat and La Follette is the largest city. Jacksboro is 5.9% of the county population while La Follette is 18.9% of the county population. The largest city is pronounced LAE FOL-LET. This county is in the La Follette Micropolitan Statistical Area.
