The Greek Revival masonry building was erected in 1931.  It sits on a square at Main, Paris, Court Square, and Lexington streets.  United States Highway 70 Business is Main Street in the town.  Hart, Freeland, and Roberts provided the courthouse designs.  The building was renovated in 1981 and 2005.  The courthouse has veteran plaques inside and veterans’ memorials.  There was an 1844 courthouse earlier in Huntingdon, the only county seat.  The county was founded on November 7, 1821 as the 49th county.  It is named for Governor William Carroll.  Huntingdon is named for settler Mimican Hunt.  Carroll County was the birthplace of 1 Tennessee Governor, Gordon W. Browning. 

Carroll County government consists of a sheriff, a County Mayor, and 21 Commissioners.  Two Circuit Court Judges and One General Court Judge serve Carroll, Benton, Decatur, Hardin, and Henry counties.  Carroll County is in the western part of the state.  Memphis, Tennessee is southwest and Nashville, Tennessee is east of the county.  The county center is 1.8 miles West-Southwest of Huntingdon.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Henry, Benton, Decatur, Henderson, Madison, Gibson, and Weakley counties. 

The area of the county is 599 square miles.  It is 14 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 52 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 47.5 persons per square mile making it 70 out of 95 in the state.  Carroll County has 50.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 70 comes into the county from the east, Benton County, and goes southwest into Madison County.  United States Highway 70 Alternate originates and heads west into Gibson County.  United States Highway 79 passes northeast to southwest from Henry County to Gibson County.  The county is an overall rectangle.  Huntingdon is located in the northeast quarter of the county.  McKenzie is on the northern border of the county and extends into Henry and Weakley counties.  Huntingdon is the county seat and McKenzie is the largest city.  Huntingdon is 15.6% of the county population while McKenzie is 19.5% of the county population.
