The domed masonry facility was built in 1905 on Main, 4th, Thurman, and 3rd streets.  United States Highway 127 is Main Street.  W. Chamberlin and Company provided the Beaux Arts designs.  The building was enlarged in 1978.  The county high school was purchased in 2009 as the Justice Center to support the courthouse.  The courthouse features a clock dome and the grounds have a gazebo.  Cumberland County was organized on November 16, 1855 from parts of White, Bledsoe, Rhea, Morgan, Fentress, and Putnam counties as the 82nd county with Crossville as the only county seat.  The county was named for the Cumberland Mountains.  The county seat is a geographical term for its location at the crossroad between an east-west and a north-south trail. 

Cumberland County government consists of a sheriff, a County Mayor, and 18 Commissioners.  Four Circuit Court Judges, One Chancery Court Judge, and One General Court Judge serve Cumberland, Clay, DeKalb, Overton, Pickett, Putnam, and White counties.  The county is in eastern Tennessee.  Knoxville, Tennessee is east and Nashville, Tennessee is west of the county.  The county center is 2.5 miles East of Crossville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Fentress, Morgan, Roane, Rhea, Bledsoe, Van Buren, White, and Putnam counties. 

The area of the county is 682 square miles.  It is 4 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 22 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 89.7 persons per square mile making it 38 out of 95 in the state.  Cumberland County has 21.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 40 travels east to west through the county from Roane County to Putnam County.  United States Highway 70 parallels Interstate Highway 40 from Roane County, splits and heads west into White County.  United States Highway 70 North originates and continues to parallel Interstate Highway 40 into Putnam County.  United States Highway 127 crosses north to south from Fentress County to Bledsoe County.  The county looks like a kernel of popcorn.  Crossville is located in the western third of the county.  Crossville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 19.7% of the county population.  This county is in the Crossville Micropolitan Statistical Area.
