The red brick Modern facility was erected in 1976.  The courthouse is on a square at Court Square and Clark Street.  Tennessee State Highway 49 is one block south of the location.  Architect-Engineer Associates are the structure designers.  The old 1812 courthouse is across the street and continues to have some functions.  A 1792 courthouse was used originally until the 1812 facility was built in Charlotte, the only county seat.  The county was founded on October 25, 1803 from parts of Montgomery and Robertson counties as the 23rd county.  The county is named for Legislator William Dickson.  Charlotte was named for the wife of explorer James Robertson.  Dickson County was the birthplace of 1 Tennessee Governor, Frank G. Clement. 

Dickson County government consists of a sheriff, a County Mayor, and 12 Commissioners.  Two Circuit Court Judges, One Chancery Court Judge, Two General Court Judges, and Two Juvenile Court Judges serve Dickson, Cheatham, Houston, Humphreys, and Stewart counties.  The county is in the northwest part of the state.  Nashville, Tennessee is east and Memphis, Tennessee is southwest of the county.  The county center is 3.6 miles Southeast of Charlotte.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Montgomery, Cheatham, Williamson, Hickman, Humphreys, and Houston counties. 

The area of the county is 490 square miles.  It is 40 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 29 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 110.8 persons per square mile making it 31 out of 95 in the state.  Dickson County has 44.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 40 crosses the county from Williamson County, southeast, to Hickman County, southwest.  United States Highway 70 enters from Cheatham County, east, and exits to Humphreys County, west.  The county is an overall rectangle.  Charlotte is located near the center of the county.  The City of Dickson is in the southern quarter of the county.  Charlotte is the county seat and Dickson is the largest city.  Charlotte is 3.1% of the county population while Dickson is 29.6% of the county population.  This county is in the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin Metropolitan Statistical Area.
