The Classical Revival style dark red brick facility was built in 1996.  The facility is on Cumberland Street at Pelham Road.  Tennessee State Highway 108 is one block west of the site.  Williams, Inc., are the building architects.  The structure has a small dome.  A quilt honoring county veterans is on an inside wall.  The county was formed on January 1, 1844 from parts of Coffee, Warren, and Franklin counties as the 76th county.  Altamont, the only county seat, also had an 1885 version.  The county was named for Senator Felix Grundy.  Altamont is combines two Spanish words meaning “high mountain.” 

Grundy County government consists of a sheriff, a County Mayor, and 9 Commissioners.  Three Circuit Court Judges, One Chancery Court Judge, One General Court Judge, and One Juvenile Court Judge serve Grundy, Bledsoe, Franklin, Marion, Rhea, and Sequatchie counties.  The county is in the southeast part of Tennessee.  Chattanooga, Tennessee is southeast and Nashville, Tennessee is northwest of the county.  The county center is 4.6 miles Southeast of Altamont.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Warren, Sequatchie, Marion, Franklin, and Coffee counties. 

The area of the county is 361 square miles.  It is 63 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 80 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 37.96 persons per square mile making it 81 out of 95 in the state.  Grundy County has 51.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 24 clips the southwest corner of the county from Coffee County, west, to Marion County, south.  United States Highway 41 parallels Interstate Highway 24 from Coffee to Marion counties.  United States Highway 64 enters joined with United States Highway 41 from Marion County, splits and heads west into Franklin County.  The county’s shape is an overall diamond.  Altamont is located in the northern third of the county.  Gruetli-Laager is in the eastern third of the county.  Altamont is the county seat and Gruetli-Laager is the largest city.  Altamont is 7.6% of the county population while Gruetli-Laager is 13.2% of the county population.  The largest city is pronounced GRUET-LEE LA-GUR.
