The Modern 1998 red brick Justice Center augments the 1926 courthouse. Central, Huddleston, and Church streets surrounded the courthouse. Tennessee State Highway 100 is on the west side of the building. A depiction of comedienne Minnie Pearl is outside of the courthouse along with veterans’ memorials. The architects for the courthouse are Tisdale, Pinson & Stone. An Administration Center also augments the courthouse. There were also 1868 and 1926 courthouses in Centerville. Vernon was the first county seat until 1823 when Centerville assumed the role. Hickman County was established on December 7, 1807 from Dickson County as the 32nd county. The county is named for explorer Edwin Hickman. The county seat is a geographical name.
Hickman County government consists of a sheriff, a County Mayor, and 21 Commissioners. Two Circuit Court Judges, Two Chancery Court Judges, and One General Court Judge serve Hickman, Lewis, Perry, and Williamson counties. The county is situated in central Tennessee. Nashville, Tennessee is northeast and Memphis, Tennessee is southwest of the county. The county center is 2.7 miles North of Centerville. The county is surrounded clockwise by Dickson, Williamson, Maury, Lewis, Perry, and Humphreys counties.

It has a density of 40.6 persons per square mile making it 77 out of 95 in the state. Hickman County has 14.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 40 crosses the northwest corner of the county from Dickson County, northeast, to Humphreys County, northwest. The county resembles a bag of marbles swinging toward the southwest. Centerville is located near the center of the county. Centerville is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city. It is 14.2% of the county population. This county is in the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin Metropolitan Statistical Area.
