The Modern glass and black concrete and brick building was erected in 1974 on Gaines Street between Perry and Mahr avenues.  United States Highway 64 is Gaines Street in the town.  Hart-Freeland-Roberts and Jackson combined on the courthouse designs.  The facility has a clock tower and multiple columns.  An Administration Building was added in 2008 with the purchase and remodeling of a former bank building.  There have been 1821 and 1905 courthouses earlier in Lawrenceburg, the only county seat.  Lawrence County was formed from Hickman and Giles counties on October 21, 1817 as the 39th county.  The county and county seat are named for War of 1812 Captain James Lawrence. 

Lawrence County government consists of a sheriff, a County Executive, and 18 Commissioners.  Four Circuit Court Judges, One General Court Judge, and One Juvenile Court Judge serve Lawrence, Giles, Maury, and Wayne counties.  The county is on the southern border with Alabama.  Chattanooga, Tennessee is east and Memphis, Tennessee is west of the county.  The county center is 3.7 miles Northwest of Lawrenceburg.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Lewis, Maury, and Giles counties and Alabama and Wayne County. 

The area of the county is 617 square miles.  It is 9 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 35 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 71.6 persons per square mile making it 50 out of 95 in the state.  Lawrence County has 33.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 43 passes north to south in the county from Maury County to Alabama.  United States Highway 64 goes east to west from Giles County to Wayne County.  The county is an overall rectangle.  Lawrenceburg is located in the eastern third of the county.  Lawrenceburg is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 26.4% of the county population.  This county is in the Lawrenceburg Micropolitan Statistical Area.
